CATHERINE ACHOLONU RESEARCH CENTER is pleased to extend its invitaion to scholars conducting research in areas of African Cutural Studies - Oral Traditions, Religion, Symbolism, Dance, Ritual, Rock Art and Stone Inscriptions, Megalithic Writings, Pre-History and related areas, to take advantage of our wealth of information garnered, gathered and collated over the past twenty years at our Abuja based Center and library. ACHOLONU'S LECTURES AT NYU,CUNY AND MEDGAR EVER COLLEGE

In November 2009 Professor Catherine Acholonu, the Director of the Catherine Acholonu Research Center, Abuja, was on a lecture Tour in New York, USA. She gave a Departmental Lecture to staff and students at the John Jay College of Crminal Justice, City University of New York, where her new books are on the reading list for students in the English Department.

She also gave a number of solicited class lectures in the college as well as at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, and at the African Studies Department at the New York University (NYU), sharing with faculty and students from her experiences as a library and field researcher working on the African continent, creating new research paradigms in the African Academy.

Catherine Acholonu Crowned 'Ada Igbo Ji Eje Mba' at Igbo Ukwu

Country Ambassador to the UNCCD Forum of Arts and Culture (UNFAC) and Former Special Advisor the Nigerian President, Professor Catherine Acholonu was in December 2009 crowned Ada Igbo Ji Eje Mba at Igbo Ukwu, the Homebase of Igbo Civilization, by His Royal Majesty Eze Martin Eze. The event was witnessed by the Igbo Ukwu body of Chiefs, Ndi Nze na ozo, the entire community and UNFAC.
Acholonu was being recognized for her ground-breaking research and publications on the African origin of culture and civilization. Her (three volumes) ground-breaking releases The Gram Code of African Adam (Reconstructing 450,000 Years of Africa's Lost Civilizations); They Lived Before Adam (Pre-Historic Origins of the Igbo - The Never Been Ruled) and The Lost Testament of the Ancestors of Adam (soon to be released) are taking the world by storm and rewriting history as we know it.
She won the Philis Wheately and Flora Nwapa Awards at the Harlem Book Fair (Schomburg Center), New York in 2009.

Acholonu At Harlem Book Fair, New York, 2009

Catherine Acholonu was really on the go in 2009. Her just published book They Lived Before Adam was invited to the Harlem Book Fair, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, New York and cleared two awards with plaques: the Philis Wheatley Award for Work That Transcends Culture and Perception and the Flora Nwapa Award for Literary Excellence. They Lived Before Adam was actually celebrated at the Fiar as a groundbreaking publication and piece of research. Accordingly a dance drama titled "She Who Digs Up Truth" was staged at the Schomburg Center Auditorium by the hosts of the Fair in honour of Acholonu and her epoch-making publication.

Acholonu's presentation at the event was aired on C-Span Book TV, New Nork and was viewed by a global auddience, with two repeat broadcasts. The video can be viewed on C-Span Library.

Catherine subsequently gave class lectures at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, Department of English, and at John Jay College for Criminal Justice, CUNY; as well as a Departmental lecture at John Jay on the topic - "Emerging Cultural an Historical Research in Sub-Saharan Africa - The Question of Methodology and Medium of Communication".

The lecture sought to establish that African scholars must create new paradigms for the Research in African Studies bearing in mind that indegenous methods of storing information are different from what obtains in the West.

The paper concludes:

"Our research Foundation (the Catherine Acholonu Research Center) is breaking new grounds in innovative scholarship to bring Black Africa out of the shadows and re-launch indigenous African forms of knowledge and expression as formal and legitimate in their own right. In particular, our study and discovery of lost forms of writing (e.g stone inscriptions) used by Prehistoric Black Africans more than 4,000 years ago are deserving of serious attention in the African and Western Academy..."

THE TENTH NATIONAL BLACK WRITERS CONFEENCE, MEDGER EVERS COLLEGE, NEW YORK

The Tenth National Black Writers Conference has just come and gone from 25th to 28th March 2010, held at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, New York, USA with Tony Morrison (Nobel Prize winner) as Honorary Chairperson. It was titled "And Then We Heard the Thunder: Black Writers Reconstructing Memories and Lighting the Way". Panel topics included -
"The Politics of Language with Bakar Wilson as moerator;
"The Black Writer as Literary Activist" with Patrick Oliver, Kalamu Ya Salaam, Dorothea Smartt and Frank Wilderson III as discussants;
"Black Writers Resurrecting the Master Narrative" with Catherine Acholonu, John Baker, Breena Clarke and Betty DeRamus as discussants.

The conference organizing committee was ably headed by Brenda Greene of the Department of English, Medgar Evers College and the Head of Department of English, Dr. Austine Okereke.

It was a celebration of veteran writers Tony Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Kamau Bratwaite who recieved awards at the conference. Catherine Acholonu, the only African Writer invited to the conference, was sadly unable to attent due to technical problems. She was represented by Dr Marie Umeh of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY.

IGBO WOMEN'S WORLD CONFERENCE, MAY, 2009

The first Igbo Women's World Conference took place in Aba from 5th to 7th May, 2009. It was hosted by the government of Abia State. The conference came on the heels of the First Festival of Igbo Civilization, Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.

Declaring the conference open, the governor of Abia State, His Excellency Chief Theodore Orji, welcomed Igbo women from at home and the Diaspora and charged them to be good ambassadors of the nation and the Igbo world. The Special Guest of Honour, Her Excellency Dame Mrs Goodluck Jonathan, wife of the Vice President, appreciated the work of the organizers of the conference. Other Special guests present were the wives of four state governors, while that of Imo State was represented by the Imo Commissioner for Women Affairs.

The Chairman of the occasion Ambassador Raph Uwaechue, President General of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo praised the women and charged them to be the conscience of the Igbo nation and protect the children and youths in their care.

In her keynote Address the conference Planning Committee Chairperson, Professor Catherine Acholonu gave an account of the events leading to the conference and the need to heed Professor Achebe's advice given in his 2009 Ahiajoku lecture, that Mother is Supreme and that Igbo men should harken to their women when things go owry in the society.
Professor T. Nwala gave an account of the involment of his organization CODES in partnersing with Ohanaeze towards the Festival of Igbo Civilization.

Over 30 academic papers were delivered at the deliberations, including a paper on the dwindling respect for Women priestesses in Igbo society delivered by a German researcher on Igbo Water goddesses, Prof Sabine Jell-Bahlsen.

The conference ended with resolutions on annual conferences, protecting Igbo Language and Culture and struggle for women's rights in the society. The Women ruled that henceforth all deliberations, conferences and gatherings of Igbo people must be conducted in Igbo language.

The women visited the grave of the leader of the Aba Women's War of 1929, led by Prof Catherine Acholonu and a representative of the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs Theodore Orji.
