THE TENTH NATIONAL BLACK WRITERS CONFEENCE, MEDGER EVERS COLLEGE, NEW YORK

The Tenth National Black Writers Conference has just come and gone from 25th to 28th March 2010, held at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, New York, USA with Tony Morrison (Nobel Prize winner) as Honorary Chairperson. It was titled "And Then We Heard the Thunder: Black Writers Reconstructing Memories and Lighting the Way". Panel topics included -
"The Politics of Language with Bakar Wilson as moerator;
"The Black Writer as Literary Activist" with Patrick Oliver, Kalamu Ya Salaam, Dorothea Smartt and Frank Wilderson III as discussants;
"Black Writers Resurrecting the Master Narrative" with Catherine Acholonu, John Baker, Breena Clarke and Betty DeRamus as discussants.

The conference organizing committee was ably headed by Brenda Greene of the Department of English, Medgar Evers College and the Head of Department of English, Dr. Austine Okereke.

It was a celebration of veteran writers Tony Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Kamau Bratwaite who recieved awards at the conference. Catherine Acholonu, the only African Writer invited to the conference, was sadly unable to attent due to technical problems. She was represented by Dr Marie Umeh of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY.
